The biggest mistake I see small business owners make with AI isn't using the wrong tool.
It's waiting for the perfect one.
You don't need to understand AI to use it
When you first got a smartphone, did you read the manual cover to cover? Did you take a course on how touchscreens work? No. You picked it up, tapped some things, and figured it out as you went.
AI is the same.
You don't need to understand how large language models work. You don't need to know what "tokens" or "parameters" mean. You need to know what task you want help with and how to ask for it.
Start with one thing
Here's what I tell every client: pick one task that eats your time every week. Something repetitive, something boring, something you keep putting off.
For most people, that's one of these:
- Writing emails that all sound the same
- Summarizing notes after a meeting
- Creating social media content from scratch
- Answering the same client questions over and over
Pick one. Just one. Then open ChatGPT (or whatever tool you have) and ask it to help.
It won't be perfect on the first try
And that's fine. The first draft from AI is a starting point, not a final product. You'll tweak it. You'll make it sound like you. And the next time you do it, you'll get better at asking for what you want.
That's the real skill here. Not "AI expertise." Just getting better at describing what you need.
The cost of waiting
While you're researching which AI tool is "the best," your competitor is already using one. They're saving 5 hours a week. They're sending better emails. They're showing up more consistently on social media.
The best AI tool is the one you actually use.
Ready to stop overthinking?
You don't have to figure this out alone. That's literally what I do. I help small business owners go from "I know I should be using AI" to "I can't believe I waited this long."
