How to Turn Off AI Training in ChatGPT

Before you start

By default, OpenAI uses your ChatGPT conversations to train and improve future AI models. That means anything you type, including client names, business strategies, and sensitive information, could become part of the training data.

If you use ChatGPT for business, especially with client information, turning this off is a smart move. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds.

Step 1, Open Data Controls

1. Open this page: chatgpt.com/#settings/DataControls (if you're logged out, ChatGPT will prompt you to log in first, then drop you right on the Data Controls panel).
2. Look for the toggle labeled "Improve the model for everyone."

Step 2, Turn off the toggle

1. Click the toggle to turn it off. It should no longer be green or active.
2. That's it. Your conversations will no longer be used for training.

Good to know: Turning this off does NOT affect how ChatGPT works for you. It will still remember your conversation within each chat session, still give you the same quality answers, and still save your chat history. The only difference is that your conversations won't be used to train future models.

What about paid plans?

How this works depends on your ChatGPT plan:

• Free, Plus, and Pro (personal): Training is ON by default. You need to turn it off manually using the steps above.
• Team, Business, and Enterprise: Training is already OFF by default. OpenAI does not use your data for training on these plans.

Tip: If you're on a free or personal paid plan and work with any client data, turn this off. It takes 30 seconds and gives you peace of mind.

What about the API?

If you use the OpenAI API (for Zapier integrations or other third-party tools), your data is not used for training by default. No action needed.

The API is separate from the ChatGPT website. API data has never been used for training by default since March 2023. This guide only applies to the ChatGPT chat interface.

Verify it worked

Go back to chatgpt.com/#settings/DataControls and confirm the "Improve the model for everyone" toggle is off. If it stays off after you refresh the page, you're done.
