Before you start
As of late 2025, Anthropic uses conversations from free and paid consumer accounts (Free, Pro, Max) to improve Claude by default. If you're entering client information, business strategies, or anything sensitive, you'll want to opt out. The whole thing takes about 30 seconds.
Step 1, Open Settings
- Log in to claude.ai.
- Click your name or profile icon in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Settings.
Open Claude Privacy settings →
Step 2, Find the Privacy toggle
- In Settings, look for the Privacy section.
- Find the toggle labeled "Help improve Claude."
Step 3, Turn it off
- Click the toggle to turn it off.
- Done. Your conversations will no longer be used for model training.
Good to know: Turning this off does NOT change how Claude works for you. You'll still get the same quality responses. Your chat history is still saved. The only change is your conversations won't feed into future training.
What about paid plans?
How this works depends on your Claude plan:
- Free, Pro, and Max (personal): Training is ON by default. Turn it off using the steps above.
- Team and Enterprise: Your data is never used for training. No action needed.
What about the API?
If you use the Claude API (for custom integrations or third-party tools), your data is never used for training. This is a flat policy. No toggle needed, no opt-out required.
The API and the claude.ai chatbot are separate. This guide is only about the chatbot at claude.ai. If you're connecting Claude through any third-party tool via the API, your data is already protected.
One more thing
Important: If you give explicit feedback (thumbs up or thumbs down on a response), that specific conversation may still be reviewed by Anthropic regardless of your setting. If you want maximum privacy, avoid using the feedback buttons on sensitive conversations.
Verify it worked
Go back to Settings, Privacy and confirm the "Help improve Claude" toggle is off. Refresh the page to make sure the setting stuck. If it stays off, you're done.
