How to Create a Free ChatGPT Account

Get set up on OpenAI's ChatGPT in a few minutes.

This is a quick walkthrough to sign up for ChatGPT so you're ready for your workshop or coaching session. It takes about 2 minutes.

Before you start

You'll need:

  1. An email address (or a Google or Apple account if you prefer to sign up with those)
  2. A phone number for verification (OpenAI sends a one-time code)

Step 1, Go to ChatGPT

Open chatgpt.com →

  1. Open your browser and go to chatgpt.com.
  2. Click the Sign up for free button in the top-right corner.

Step 2, Create your account

You can sign up a few different ways:

  1. With your Google account, Apple ID, phone number, or a regular email address.
  2. If you use email, you'll create a password and verify your email address.
  3. Enter your name when prompted.
  4. Verify your phone number. OpenAI sends a text message with a code.

Tip. Signing up with Google is the fastest option. One click and you're in, no extra password to remember.

Step 3, Start using ChatGPT

  1. Once your account is created, you'll land on the ChatGPT chat screen.
  2. Type a message in the box at the bottom and press Enter. That's it.
  3. Your free account gives you access to GPT-4o, the latest model, with some usage limits.

Good to know. The free tier is plenty for getting started and following along with workshops. You do not need to upgrade to a paid plan unless you want unlimited usage or advanced features like file uploads and image generation.

Step 4, Bookmark it

Save chatgpt.com as a bookmark so you can find it quickly next time. You can also download the ChatGPT app for your phone:

Verify it worked

If you can see the ChatGPT chat screen with a text box at the bottom, you're in. Try typing "hello" and pressing Enter. If ChatGPT responds, your account is fully set up.

Optional, turn off AI training

By default, OpenAI uses your conversations to improve their models. If you're working with client information or sensitive business data, you may want to turn this off.
