How to Turn Off AI Training in Gemini

Before you start

By default, Google uses your Gemini conversations to improve their AI products. That means your prompts and responses can be read by human reviewers and used in future model training. If you use Gemini with any business or client information, turning this off is a must.

Heads up: Unlike ChatGPT and Claude, turning off Gemini training also turns off your conversation history. You won't be able to go back and review past chats. This is a Google design choice, not something you can change separately.

Step 1, Open Gemini

1. Go to gemini.google.com and make sure you're logged in.

Step 2, Open Activity Controls

1. Click the clock icon (Activity) in the left sidebar, or go directly to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
2. You'll see a section called "Gemini Apps Activity."

Step 3, Turn it off

1. Click the toggle next to "Gemini Apps Activity" to turn it off.
2. Google will warn you that turning this off disables your conversation history. Click Pause (or Turn off) to confirm.

Good to know: Gemini will still work perfectly. You just won't see a history of past conversations in the sidebar. Each session starts fresh. For business use, this is actually a benefit. No client data sitting around in your chat history.

What about Google Workspace?

How this works depends on how you access Gemini:

• Personal Google account (free or Google One AI Premium): Training is ON by default. Turn it off using the steps above.
• Google Workspace with Gemini (business): Your data is not used for training. It's treated as business data under Google's Cloud Data Processing Addendum.

Tip: If you access Gemini through your company's Google Workspace, you're already protected. This guide is mainly for people using Gemini with a personal Gmail account.

Optional: delete past activity

If you want to clean up conversations from before you turned this off:

1. Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
2. Click Delete and choose your time range (Last hour, Last day, All time).

Important: Even after deleting, Google may retain data for up to 72 hours. Conversations that were already reviewed by humans are kept (disconnected from your account) for up to 3 years.

Verify it worked

Go back to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini and confirm Gemini Apps Activity shows as Paused or Off. If it does, you're done.
