How to Add Jeanette as a GitHub Collaborator

Why you're doing this

If Jeanette is helping you build, update, or deploy a project that lives on your own GitHub account, she needs permission to push code into your repository. Without that permission, every change has to go through you, which slows everything down.

Adding her as a collaborator gives her permission to push and deploy code to your repo, but only this one repo. She can't see anything else on your account, and you can remove her access in one click anytime.

Good to know. This is the standard way professionals work together on GitHub. It's safe, it's easy to undo, and it doesn't cost anything.

Step 1. Open your repository on GitHub

1. Go to github.com and sign in.
2. Click your profile photo in the top-right corner, then click Your repositories.
3. Find the repository Jeanette is helping you with and click its name to open it.

Tip. If Jeanette built the project, the repo name is usually something like your-business-name-app or your-business-name-booking. If you're not sure which one, ask her.

Step 2. Open the repository settings

1. At the top of the repository page, you'll see a row of tabs (Code, Issues, Pull requests, etc.).
2. Click the Settings tab on the far right of that row.

Make sure you're clicking Settings on the repository, not on your account. Repository settings are inside the repo page. Account settings are under your profile picture in the top-right.

Step 3. Go to Collaborators

1. In the left sidebar of the Settings page, look for the Access section.
2. Click Collaborators.
3. GitHub may ask you to confirm your password before showing you the page. That's normal. Type your password and continue.

Step 4. Add Jeanette

1. Click the green Add people button.
2. In the search box, type JeanetteLynn (that's Jeanette's GitHub username, no space, capital J and L).
3. You'll see Jeanette's profile appear in the dropdown. Click it.
4. Click Add JeanetteLynn to this repository.

Good to know. The default permission level is Write, which is exactly what Jeanette needs. You don't need to change anything about the role.

Verify it worked

That's it. Jeanette will get an email invitation from GitHub. Once she accepts (usually within a few minutes), she can push updates to your repository directly. You don't need to do anything else.

You can confirm she was added by looking at the Manage access section on the same page. Her name should appear in the list with a Pending invite badge until she accepts, and then it will switch to Collaborator.

If something goes wrong. If you don't see Jeanette in the search dropdown, double-check the spelling of JeanetteLynn. If you typed it correctly and still don't see her, just email Jeanette and she'll send you a screenshot of her profile to confirm.

How to remove access (anytime)

If you ever want to remove Jeanette's access (after the project is done, or for any other reason), it's a one-click undo:

1. Go back to the same Settings → Collaborators page.
2. Find JeanetteLynn in the list.
3. Click the Remove button next to her name.
4. Confirm.

Done. She no longer has access. Nothing else changes about your repository.
